We enjoy eating meat but are also concerned about animal welfare in many farming systems. We have spent a lot of time looking at this and worked closely with many organisations to come up with our welfare promise that means we can sleep easy at night. The Promise 1. Free Range All the meat we use in our sauces is from animals reared on free range farming systems. When we say free range we mean the animals have access to the outdoors throughout their life except when weather conditions dictate. 2. The 5 Freedoms We only work with farmers who are committed to exceptional welfare standards and who adhere to the 5 freedoms principle:
BeefAll of our beef comes from a small number of British farms We use proper cuts of beef for our mince and never use mechanically recovered meat. Our cattle spend most of the year naturally grazing in the fields and during very cold or wet weather are kept in small groups in large airy barns. This produces an excellent quality of meat as well as a high level of welfare for the cattle. ChickenAt Klein Caporn we stay well clear of the often horrendous intensive farming practices that are sadly employed for so many of our UK chicken and egg production. Our free range chickens live the life a farm chicken should. Feeding on healthy foods, roaming outdoors where appropriate and generally clucking a lot more happily than their poor battery cousins. Pork The history of pork production is a sorry tale of profit, economy and yield over animal welfare and quality. Legal guidelines still allow what, in our opinion, is not a decent lifestyle for many of the pigs reared in the UK and throughout the EU. Our British free range pork allows us to sleep easy in the knowledge that all of our pigs have been well reared and looked after throughout their lives by qualified, caring farmers. These happier pigs give a much, much better tasting bacon and pork. Our bacon comes from pigs reared on a small number of British farms with freedom to roam and forage in the great outdoors. With such well reared pigs our bacon producers are able to make a fantastic final product, dry curing in the traditional way and never adding water. |
